CMA issues statement on the death of Palm Springs physician David Duffner, M.D.

November 28, 2023

Physicians are reminded that the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) requires that all Medi-Cal managed care providers be enrolled in the Medi-Cal program through the Provider Application and Validation for Enrollment (PAVE) portal. Physicians who previously enrolled without going through PAVE may be required to go through the PAVE process to comply with enrollment requirements.

This requirement, which took effect in January 2018, was implemented due to changes in federal law requiring states to screen and enroll, and periodically revalidate, all network physicians of managed care organizations.

This requirement to enroll in the Medi-Cal Program applies to all Medi-Cal managed care providers, including those participating through an IPA. Medi-Cal managed care plans have the option to develop and implement a managed care physician screening and enrollment process that meets federal requirements, or they may direct their network physicians to enroll through PAVE.

If you are contracted with a Medi-Cal managed care plan and you have not completed the Medi-Cal enrollment process through PAVE, you are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to avoid termination from Medi-Cal managed care plan networks or a disruption in payments. If you are unsure whether you are enrolled through PAVE, contact DHCS.
