About the Legal Information Line: CMA’s Center for Legal Affairs provides members with information about laws and regulations that impact the practice of medicine.

How we can help: CMA staff can give legal information and can refer you to state agencies, and other resources, to assist you with your situation.

Who should call: If you are a CMA physician looking for legal resources, we are here to help. If you are a spouse, office manager, or colleague calling on behalf of a CMA physician member, please don’t hesitate to give us a call and let us know who you are calling on behalf.

Please note that CMA staff cannot provide individual legal advice or predict the outcome of your court case or legal problems.

Legal Line Limitations

As a 501(c)(6) nonprofit membership association, CMA engages in advocacy on issues that benefit all CMA members and further CMA’s mission. Laws governing 501(c)(6) nonprofit associations, however, limit CMA's ability to provide legal representation to individual members. Instead, CMA's legal advocacy and resources are directed at efforts that benefit CMA members at large, such as providing legal expertise in support of CMA's regulatory and legislative advocacy, engaging in litigation that impacts the practice of medicine generally, and offering legal information and tools to our members on demand through our legal line and compendium of legal articles, the California Physician's Legal Handbook (available free to members through the Health Law Library).
