CMA publishes 2017 Legislative Wrap-Up

October 26, 2017
Area(s) of Interest: Health Care Reform

The delivery of health care, and its costs, continue to be at the forefront of California politics. Dramatic actions and threats to the Affordable Care Act on the national level, the California Legislature’s consideration of a single-payer system, Governor Brown’s effort to steal Proposition 56 funding from providers, and the opioid epidemic, continue to create uncertainty in the marketplace, causing state legislators to introduce a flurry of legislation that touch upon nearly every aspect of health care delivery in California. The result has been a number of significant legislative challenges to the core policy beliefs of the California Medical Association (CMA).

CMA Senior Vice President of Government Relations Janus Norman has published his annual Legislative Wrap-Up, which provides an insider's take on what went down this session—including the great opportunities, great threats and great compromises faced by the House of Medicine, including the fight over Proposition 56 funds.

“Although this fight will no doubt play out again in some future years and we will need to be vigilant to ensure continued funding,” Norman said, “this year’s budget success seals the intent of the voters and will provide relief for California’s shamefully low Medi-Cal reimbursement rates.”

CMA’s 2017 Legislative Wrap-Up, "Unwavering Defense," provides more information on these fights and the many bills CMA followed this session.

The wrap-up is available to members only in CMA's online resource library.
