CMS re-opens Physician Compare preview period following updates to 2023 MIPS data

August 06, 2025

What You Need to Know: CMS has re-opened the Doctors and Clinicians preview period for calendar year 2023, giving physicians another chance to review their MIPS info before publication.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has re-opened the Doctors and Clinicians (DAC) preview period for calendar year (CY) 2023, citing recent updates to performance data made available through the Quality Payment Program (QPP). The re-opening gives physicians and clinicians another opportunity to review their Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) information before it is published on the Care Compare website.

The re-opened preview period will remain open until August 21, 2025, at 8 p.m. (EST). CMS is encouraging all clinicians and groups to carefully review their 2023 MIPS performance information for any changes – even if they previously reviewed their information during the initial preview period, which closed in June.

During this extended window, physicians also have the opportunity to opt out from having their 2023 MIPS performance data publicly reported on Care Compare. Physicians who had previously opted out will retain that status unless they notify CMS of a change.

The Care Compare website, which includes publicly available performance measures and data, is designed to increase transparency and help patients make informed health care decisions. CMS uses MIPS data so that patients and caregivers can make informed decisions about healthcare based on cost, quality of care, volume of services, and other data.

For more information about the preview period and how to review or update your data, visit the Physician Compare Initiative website.
