Congratulations to Chang Na, M.D., this week’s winner of CMA's Trivia Tuesday challenge, successfully answering the week 3 trivia question: Who was the first female president of the California Medical Association?
Answer: Roberta Fenlon, M.D.
San Francisco internist Roberta Fenlon, M.D., was elected president of the California Medical Association in 1970, becoming the first woman to hold that position. Dr. Fenlon had worked her way through the ranks of the San Francisco Medical Society, from editor and public relations committee member to president. Participation in CMA in the 1960s took her to Washington to lobby for physicians’ and patients’ interests during the creation of Medicare and Medicaid, and landed her an appointment in 1965-66 as the Social Security Administration’s chief consultant on Medicare.
In an intervew with the Los Angeles Times shortly after her election, she gave the following advice for aspiring women physicians. “Don’t listen to anybody who tries to talk you out of it. You’ll have to prove yourself but everybody has to do that. Everybody in America has the right to achieve what he wants to be.”
