As California strives to develop a diverse health care workforce, too many underrepresented minorities face unique obstacles to joining and staying in medicine. At the Sept. 14-15 Health Equity Leadership Summit, hosted by Physicians for a Healthy California, attendees will hear from a panel of experts and practitioners as they discuss how best to attract, retain and develop clinicians of color.
Featured speaker Deena Shin McRae, M.D., the Associate Vice President of Academic Health Sciences at University of California Health, will share insights to help organizations and individuals attract and retain diverse talent.
Dr. McRae leads and provides strategic direction to advance UC’s academic health sciences mission and the goals of the UC Health system and individual campuses.
UC operates the largest public health sciences instruction program in the nation, with approximately 16,000 health sciences students and trainees across 20 schools on seven campuses.
Dr. McRae will moderate a panel titled, The Diversity Tax, Moral Injury and Career Satisfaction: How Medicine Can Attract and Retain Talent. The “diversity tax” – the additional time, work, opportunity costs, and expectations that disproportionately impact people of color – has long impeded efforts to create a health care workforce that reflects California. This session will explore the post-COVID factors that contribute to moral injury and decreased career satisfaction in the health care system, and provide practical methods to improve morale, recruitment and retention of our valuable clinicians of color.
Other participants who will be joining the panel session include:
- Tonya Fancher, M.D., MPH, Vice Chair for Workforce Diversity and Associate Dean of Workforce Innovation and Education Quality Improvement, UC Davis Health
- Melissa See, M.D., MPA, Site Medical Director, AltaMed
- Ursula Worsham, Ed.D., Diversity Officer, UC Irvine School of Medicine
