Webinar: Demystifying the Medical Staff

June 08, 2023

Have you contemplated involvement in your hospital medical staff, but are unsure how to get involved or are undecided as to whether involvement is worth the time? The California Medical Association (CMA) is hosting a one-hour webinar on July 18 at 12:15 p.m., which will cover the basic structure, role and purpose of the hospital medical staff. This webinar will provide physicians with a better understanding of medical staff functions and the importance of medical staff self-governance. There will be a brief question and answer session at the end.

This webinar is free for CMA member physicians and their staff. Hospital members of CMA’s Organized Medical Staff Section can also request a promo code for free registration by emailing medstaffhelp@cmadocs.org.

Presenter: Shari Covington, CMA Legal Counsel

Shari Covington is a health care attorney in the CMA Center for Legal Affairs. Before joining CMA, she worked for a boutique firm in the Bay Area representing solely physicians in medical board matters, employment contract review drafting and negotiations, separation agreements, labor and employment issues such as performance improvement plans negotiations and EEOC filings, peer review defense, National Practitioner Data Bank rebuttals, large scale medical billing appeals against insurance companies, medical practice establishment, the reorganization of medical practices, as well as the sale of medical practices. Ms. Covington’s work at CMA has spanned protecting California physicians in courts through amicus briefs, editing and authoring chapters in the California Physician’s Legal Handbook, listening to and advising on medical staff concerns, and much more.
