CMA’s political action committee reports record fundraising at 2020 House of Delegates

October 27, 2020

On Saturday, October 24, 2020, the California Medical Association (CMA) Political Action Committee (CALPAC), shattered all previous fundraising records in its history, raising $197,343 to support its political advocacy efforts during CMA’s annual House of Delegates meeting.

Los Angeles physician Sion Roy, M.D., who began a 2-year term as chair of CALPAC at the event, addressed the delegates and stressed the importance of strong political advocacy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re here today because we know our work in organized medicine has become more important than ever,” said Dr. Roy. “We are here to determine our own future. And CALPAC’s work will be critical to ensuring our success.”

The $197,343 raised this year represents a 14% increase over its 2019 HOD fundraising total. Numerous delegations showed strong participation in the fundraising drive, with the District I and Organized Medical Staff Section delegations each seeing 100% of its members contribute.

CALPAC’s previous event fundraising record of $176,000 was set at the 2013 House of Delegates, when MICRA was under attack by trial attorneys seeking to overturn California’s longstanding professional liability reforms through Proposition 46. CMA led the Prop. 46 opposition campaign, which failed by a 2 to 1 margin.

Operated by physicians for physicians, CALPAC supports hundreds of candidates for state and federal office who share CMA's philosophy and vision of the future of health care and medical practice.

While the success at House of Delegates is notable, CALPAC must work year-round to achieve success. Physicians and other supporters are invited to contribute at calpac.org/donate
