TRICARE transition delayed until January 1, 2018

Area(s) of Interest: Commercial Payors Payor Issues and Reimbursement

The transition of the new TRICARE contract from UnitedHealthcare Military and Veterans’ Services to Health Net Federal Services (HNFS) will be delayed from October 1, 2017, to January 1, 2018. With the replacement of TRICARE Extra and TRICARE Standard with the new TRICARE Select product slated to begin January 1, 2018, this delay will now align the rollout of both changes, potentially reducing disruption of care for TRICARE recipients.

The California Medical Association previously reported that the Department of Defense awarded the $17.7 billion TRICARE West Region contract to HNFS, providing managed care services to 2.9 million TRICARE beneficiaries in 19 western states, including California.

In preparation for the transition, Health Net sent recruitment notices to physicians beginning in April 2017, soliciting interest in participation in the new HNFS West Region network. Health Net indicates that it anticipates completion of all provider contracting by July. Additional information regarding the transition will be available on its website in September.

Physicians with questions regarding the TRICARE transition may contact HNFS at HNFSProvRel@healthnet.com.
