Area(s) of Interest: Out of Network Billing

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently hosted a webinar to discuss the implementation of the federal No Surprises Act (NSA).

This new federal law—part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act COVID-19 relief bill—took effect on January 1, 2022, and as primarily designed to reduced unexpected medical bills for patients enrolled in federally-regulated self-funded/ERISA group health plans or insurers, who receive: (1) covered non-emergency services by out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, or (2) emergency services by out-of-network providers.

The AMA webinar—AMA Advocacy Insights webinar series: Implementing the No Surprises Act—is now available for on-demand playback. Speakers also tackle enforcement challenges and the interaction between state and federal surprise billing requirements.

The California Medical Association (CMA) continues to fight the ill-conceived NSA regulation and is aggressively pressing regulators, Congress and the courts for a more balanced system.
