Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 8 “The Bipartisan (Firearm) Background Checks Act of 2019,” (Mike Thompson, D-Napa) with a bipartisan vote of 240-190.

This bill—supported by the California Medical Association (CMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA)—H.R. 8 would expand the existing background check system to cover all firearm sales, including those at gun shows, over the internet and through classified ads, while providing reasonable exceptions for law enforcement and family and friend transfers.

CMA applauds Congressman Thompson’s efforts to close loopholes and “…keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.” CMA continues to strongly advocate for stopping firearm violence, as California has some of the strongest protections in the country. The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate where it faces greater hurdles.

CMA also continues to support Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) efforts to reinstate the national assault weapons ban, which makes it a crime to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon or a large capacity ammunition feeding device.
