Lance Lewis

Chief Operating Officer

Lance R. Lewis is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the California Medical Association (CMA). A veteran member of the CMA staff for more than 20 years, Mr. Lewis is responsible for the administrative and operational support centers of the organization, including the departments of Governance, Finance and Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology and Facilities Management. He is also the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Association and its Affiliates, which comprise more than a dozen non-profit and for-profit companies with $30 million in annual operating revenues and $112 million in assets under management.

Mr. Lewis is a member of the Board of Directors for CalHIPSO, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping clinicians successfully transition to electronic health record systems and attain Meaningful Use. In addition, he serves as Chief Financial Officer for several other non-profit organizations including Physicians for a Healthy California and the California Public Protection & Physician Health organization. Mr. Lewis maintains a relentless focus on the cultural interaction between individuals and teams across the entire company by emphasizing the need for teamwork. He does this by persuading others to see themselves as integral to achieving the company’s goals and by creating enthusiasm for tackling obstacles to success through cooperation, mutual reliance and accountability.

During his tenure as COO, Mr. Lewis transformed the budgeting process from a traditional accounting method to an activity-based costing model, orchestrated the sale of a subsidiary creating a perpetual endowment and devised a new integrated Association Management System connecting CMA to its 42 component medical organizations and related subsidiaries to exchange data in real-time.

In 2016, Mr. Lewis helped launch PSO Services, LLC, a national health care solutions company that offers products and services to help independent physicians transition to value-based care and other alternative payment models. He is the company’s first CEO.

Mr. Lewis was named CFO of the Year by the Sacramento Business Journal in 2017.

Previously, Mr. Lewis served in other capacities at CMA including Associate Vice President for Government Relations and Director of Legislative Services and Web Communications.

Mr. Lewis earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UC Santa Barbara and his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.

Center for Finance and Administration

The Center for Finance and Administration is composed of several departments including Financial Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, Facilities, Meetings and Conventions. Each of the departments in the Center provides daily support to CMA elected leadership, county medical societies and professional staff.
