CMA seeks nominations for Workforce Advisory Council
The California Medical Association (CMA) is seeking physicians to volunteer their time and expertise towards creating new competency standards, supporting educational loan repayment and expanding graduate medical education (GME). Each effort supports California’s physician workforce while further improving patient care. We currently have three opportunities:
Opportunity: Cultural and Linguistic Competency
CMA is creating new standards on implicit bias, as well as updating the cultural and linguistic competency standards for continuing medical education (CME) activities. California law requires all CME activities (with few exceptions) to incorporate cultural and linguistic competency into the educational activity. All CME activities on or after January 1, 2022, must also include implicit bias.
CMA seeks qualified individuals to serve a two-year term on an advisory council that will ultimately inform CMA’s CME efforts. Advisory council activities include:
- Reading literature reviews
- Analyzing internal data on CME activities, focus groups, surveys, etc.
- Analyzing existing practices
- Developing recommendations regarding best practices and evaluation metrics
- Developing recommendations regarding CME activities
- Developing standards
- Providing feedback on collateral materials
- Attending and participating in advisory council meetings
Individuals should have expertise in at least one of the following:
- Cultural and linguistic competency and cultural humility
- Implicit bias and unconscious bias
- Medically underserved communities
- Physician education or CME

Opportunity: Educational Loan Repayment
Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC)—CMA’s foundation—administers the CalHealthCares program, which provides loan repayment on educational debt for California physicians and dentists who provide care to Medi-Cal patients to expand access to care for all Californians, particularly those in underserved communities.
PHC seeks qualified individuals to serve a minimum two-year term on the advisory council to provide expertise on applicant eligibility, scoring criteria and monitoring, as well as scoring applications and recommending awardees.
Qualified individuals should have expertise in at least one of the following:
- Medi-Cal
- Medical and/or dental practices in underserved communities
- Physician education

Opportunity: Graduate Medical Education
PHC also administers the CalMedForce program, which provides grants to GME residency programs that provide access to care in underserved communities.

Qualified individuals should have expertise in at least one of the following:
- Medically underserved communities
- Specialty (primary care and/or emergency medicine)
- GME
- Access to care issues
