President

Tanya W. Spirtos, M.D., president of the California Medical Association, is a gynecologist at Stanford Health Care in Northern California. Originally from Connecticut, she attended the University of Chicago and then Northwestern University School of Medicine, going on to an Ob/Gyn residency at the University of Southern California. Once completed, she joined a multispecialty group in the Bay Area. After her twins were born, her practice focused on only gynecology and she continues in active patient care to the present. She has served on her hospital board of directors, volunteered in the medical student free clinic at Stanford, and participated in resident education. She is also active in community and church affairs.

After serving in many levels of leadership at the California Medical Association, she became president in October 2023 for a one-year term. At the American Medical Association, she has been a member of the California delegation since 2012 and has a leadership role in the PacWest, composed of 13 states and Guam. The current focus of her advocacy efforts are reproductive freedoms, elevated maternal mortality, impact of AI on the patient-doctor relationship, and improving access to care – especially in populations served by Medi-Cal and Medicare.
