TITLE: Research Associate

DIVISION: Legal

REPORTS TO: Chief Legal Officer 

OFFICE LOCATION: Sacramento

EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt                      

SALARY RANGE: $50,000-$60,000

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking candidates for the position of Research Associate in our Center for Legal Affairs. This position provides legal and policy research and administrative support to the Center for Legal Affairs.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform legal research and analysis

  • Respond to requests for legal information from CMA membership and the public

  • Provide legal information to CMA staff as requested

  • Administer the Center's non-advisory legal information program, including maintenance of the California Physician's Legal Handbook (CPLH) and direct responses to physician inquiries for information on California health law

  • Provide customer service for purchasers of CPLH, including setting up accounts, processing subscription orders and troubleshooting

  • Manage the CPLH production process, including collecting and preparing materials for production

  • Coordinate the development of marketing materials for Legal Center publications

  • Coordinate online research and reference services including Westlaw and Lexis

  • Provide administrative support to the Center for Legal Affairs

  • Maintain the Center’s publications, including patient and member resources

  • Track data and general reports for legal information requests

  • Maintain and update legal and policy information for CMA publications and website

  • Provide the Strategic Engagement Center with contributing administrative support to lead CMA staff when needed in physician group councils

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

  • Knowledge of legal research techniques, including experience with Westlaw

  • Knowledge of and ability to develop advocacy and implement policy, research and analyze health and medical issues

  • Understanding of legal system and legislative process

  • Interest in diversity and inclusion initiatives

  • Familiarity with Westlaw and ClearVantage database

  • Experience with computers, including familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office suite

  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem solving, oral and written communication, and customer service skills

  • Equivalent of a 4-year college degree. Special experience or training in the legal field or public policy, public administration, health policy or related field preferred.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION:

Position requires operation of normal office equipment, computer, printers, photocopier, fax machines, multi-line phone, mobile communications tools

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Minimal travel required.
